Day 8: Beautiful Moments

This weekend is Thanksgiving here in Canada.  Today, as we gather with with family and friends, I'm reminded of this Peanuts comic (Excerpt from IMBb)...

Charlie Brown: [reading a letter to Snoopy about his promotion to head beagle] Well, I'll be.
[hands the letter to Linus, who also reads it]
Linus van Pelt: Well, I'll be!
Charlie Brown: Who else do you know whose dog's just been promoted to head beagle?
Lucy van Pelt: Head beagle? That stupid dog can't be promoted to head beagle! He'll bring ruination upon the country! He'll destroy us all! He's inept, he's incompetent, he's...
Snoopy: Hmph! If you don't mind, the head beagle would like to be alone to prepare his acceptance speech!
[hops off his dog house and kicks it]
Charlie Brown: I recognize that kick. That's the kick of someone who'd like to be alone to prepare his acceptance speech.
Snoopy: I don't think that's an unreasonable request.
Charlie Brown: And considers that a reasonable request.
Lucy van Pelt: Weird!
[She, Linus, and Charlie Brown leave]
Snoopy: [proudly] Just think - head beagle! I wish I knew where Mom was. Beautiful moments are meant to be shared.

Day 7: Motorcar Magic

"CARS!"

Every time that Oliver sees a car, that's what he says.

He loves to walk around the block pointing out all of the vehicles parked in driveways and on the street.  If a storybook has an illustration of a car within its pages, he'll be sure to let you know.  And when we go for a drive, he likes to watch the cars zipping by outside his window.

The state of our car after an entire day of driving, Trip to Cape Breton, August 2011

It must be a little boy thing.  I don't remember being particularly interested in cars as a child, but I do enjoy watching Oliver's current fascination with them.

The man responsible for bringing the motorcar to the masses has said many motivational things, but this one is my favourite...

"Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right."
- Henry Ford

Whether or not this attraction to automobiles lasts, there's a lot to be said for the advances in technology over the past century.  I wonder what the next century will bring.  With the right frame of mind, anything is possible.

Day 6: The Jobs of Design Fundamentals

Today, I've been thinking about this quote about design...

"In most people's vocabularies, design means veneer. It's interior decorating. It's the fabric of the curtains and the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a man-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service."

Day 5: Sail Away

This is one of my absolute favourite quotes...

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

- Mark Twain

So of course it was the first quote to go up on our chalkboard wall.

Day 4: He's Not Perfect

Andrea & Chris, 2007

We're all human.  This means that relationships with each other can be challenging.  But with a little bit of effort and a whole lot of understanding, it can work wonderfully.

I think this quote explains it remarkably well...

“He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break. Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect more than he can give. Don’t analyze. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had. Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you.”

- Bob Marley

Day 3: What I am

I've loved this quote for quite some time, so I was delighted to find this hand carved image over at Just Something I Made...

Read the lovely little story behind this sign HERE.

As a teenager, I spent some time working at a charming little museum.  It was located within a beautiful old Victorian house.  I assisted with everything from cataloging interesting artifacts to creating craft projects for children.

The museum's curator was also an illustrator of popular children's books, but more importantly he was also a man with such wonderful spirit... consistently cheerful and absolutely genuine.  There was always time for a coffee break and a chat with the visitors, volunteers, and characters that frequented the museum.

When I was trying to decide what direction to take career wise after art school, he told me something that has always stuck with me.  He told me that no matter what I decided to do, to always remember that I am an artist first.

So in the words of Popeye...  "I am what I am and that's all that I am."

I am an artist... but I also happen to be a few other things as well... a woman, a daughter, a wife, a mother... to name just a few.

What about you?  Who are you?

Day 2: The Mess

For today's Words to Live By, I've chosen to share a saying that I found while perusing Pinterest.
I couldn't help but pin this image of a lovely hand painted sign...

Source: etsy.com via Andrea on Pinterest

"Please excuse the mess.  The children are making memories."

During the day, those words have become our family motto.

Over the past 18 months, I've learned that it is in my sanity's best interest to leave most of the tidying up (except for spills or hazards) until the evening... after our little memory maker is in bed.

So if you happen to stop by our home for a visit during the day, you just might encounter something like the chaos, disarray and toy explosion from Welcome Wagon Wackiness... although at least now we have upgraded our living room furniture!

Most evenings I find myself putting away, wiping down, and sweeping up remnants of the memories made during the day.
As I go about this nightly routine, I remember the giggles, the games, the stories, the smiles, the snacks, and the discoveries...

...and look forward to doing it all again tomorrow.

Thanks for stopping by.

Day 1: The Courage to Start

As I stood among the crowd, I felt unusually calm.  After 3 months of preparation, I was ready.  My pockets were stuffed full of Kleenex, a reminder of the cold that I'd been battling all week.  Nevertheless, I wasn't about to let that stop me from participating today.

The cheerful announcer began his countdown... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...
A gunshot echoed through the crisp autumn air, and we were off!

I started running, reminding myself to set an easy pace that wouldn't cause my cold symptoms to flare up too much.  The absence of the usual wagging tail beside me was a clear indication that this was indeed race day.

Slowly and steadily, I made my way through the neighbourhood streets.  Every now and then, the Kleenex in my pocket eased my sniffles.

I made it over the overpass and through the tunnel under the train tracks. Then, about halfway through, the course turned towards a steep hill.  All I could think was, "keep moving forward," and made it to the top without too much difficulty, much to my surprise.

The little flags marked the way and volunteers passed out cups of water as the course looped back under the train tunnel.

As I began to climb the overpass, a mighty gust of frigid wind hit hard, as if it were trying to prevent my ascent.  Again, I just kept moving forward and made it through, the only casualty, a few strands of hair pulled loose from my french braid, put there by the loving hands of my Mom.

Although beginning to feel tired, thoughts of my family waiting at the end kept me going.  In my mind, I pictured that tail wagging beside me and imagined the steady pace of four paws, urging me onward.

Before I knew it, I could hear the cheers of the onlookers.  Their enthusiastic shouts of encouragement made me smile.  I sped up as I rounded the final corner, letting that last little bit of extra energy carry me over the finish line.

As the volunteers congratulated me and handed me a bottle of water and my finishing prize - a pair of running gloves, I thought...

...I did it!  I just ran my first 5k race!

And although there's nothing quite like the feeling of crossing that finish line...

"The miracle isn't that I finished.  The miracle is that I had the courage to start."

Bells and Whistles

I had a Blackberry once.  And even though it had way more bells and whistles than I could possibly find a use for, I still quite liked it.  Unfortunately, our dog, Roxy, liked it even more.

I suppose that I could use the classic "The dog ate my Blackberry" excuse for my infrequent blog posts of late...
{and leave out the part about how that phone's doggy demise actually happened years before Charcoal and Crayons began}
...but that would be lying.  So I'll just stick to the truth instead.

I've been running.

I can't pinpoint exactly why I decided to start running - especially since I've never considered myself a runner and even hated track and field in school.  I definitely don't look like the typical runner either.

I guess what attracted me the most to running would be its simplicity...

"If you run, you are a runner.
It doesn't matter how fast or how far.
It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years.
There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get.
You just run."

...no bells and whistles required.

So despite the odds, training to run over the past 3 months has been an incredible experience and actually enjoyable... with that good ol' Blackberry eating hound dog beside me every step of the way, of course.

The goal is to cross the finish line of the local 5km race coming up on October 1st.

Also starting on October 1st, I will be doing a special series of blog posts inspired by The Inspired Room, entitled...

Ollie's House

There’s just something special about cardboard boxes.  While they can be filled with trinkets and things, they are also filled to the brim with possibilities.  A rocket ship, a car, or a house...

...your imagination is your only limitation.

Since our move earlier this year, the basement has been storing several cardboard boxes in various stages of unpacking.  A few of those boxes just so happen to be the perfect size for a little boy to call his own.

So armed with a glue gun, a sharp knife, and pair of scissors I was able turn a couple of cardboard boxes into Ollie’s House.

It was a spontaneous sort of thing so I don’t have photos of the creation process.  I’ll try my best to explain, but if you’d like any further information on this project, please don’t hesitate to email me at andrea.brand.art@gmail.com

Here’s the how to...

Box it up

You’ll need 1 large box and 1 small box.  The ones that I used can be purchased at The Home Depot and cost around $3.50.  They come folded flat and need to be opened up and taped shut on one end.  The large box will become the main structure of the house, while the small box will be for extras such as window frames and the chimmney.

source

Cardboard Cutout

Cut off the flaps of the large box and set aside (these will become the roof).  Turn the box upside down.  Cut out an upside down L shape for a door.  Cut out squares for windows (the Home Depot logos on the sides work perfectly for this).  A little window can be cut into the door as well.  A pair of scissors or a sharp knife can be used for the cutting (I used a combination of both).

Raise the Roof

Glue together 2 of the flaps that were cut from the large box.  Repeat with the other 2 flaps.  You now have 2 panels which will form the main roof.

Make small strips about 2” in length out of the extra cardboard cut from the windows.  Fold strips in half.  Using the strips, glue the two main roof panels together.   These strips are also used like L brackets to attatch the roof to the house.

Cut 2 flaps off of the small box to use as the little roof over the doorway and attatch to the house using strips as described above.

Window Wonder

To make the frame around the window, take the extra piece cut from the window and place on the side of the small box.  Trace around the window cutout and from corner to corner.  Cut along these lines.  Here’s a quick little illustration...

Glue the pieces around the window.  Extra cardboard can be used to create a cross pattern within the window (in technical terms these are called “muntins”).  Repeat for the other windows.

A Charming Chim Chim Cher-ee

Use extra pieces from the small box to create a chimmney.  Glue 4 similar sized rectangular piecies together to create a little box.  Line up the end of that little box with the edge of the roof and trace along the roof line.  By doing this, you’ll be able to cut the bottom of your chimmney at the correct angle.  Leave the shortest side of the chimmney a little longer than the rest and fold to create a flap.  Use this flap to glue the chimmney to the roof.  Cut out a square slightly larger than the chimmeny and glue flat onto the top.  Cut and glue narrow strips to the edges of the square.  Top off your chimmeny with a section cut from an empty toilet paper or paper towel roll.

Knock Knock

You can’t answer the door without a doorknob!  I stole this knob from our master bedroom nightstand.  A few stacked pieces of cardboard create a lovely little detail that also adds extra depth for the knob’s screw.

The Great Debate

I’ve been debating over painting Ollie’s house or leaving it the way it is.  For some reason, I really quite like the cardboard look.  But I can imagine it painted... maybe a light blue with white trim like our house... and I think I’d like the look of that too.  So what do you think...

Does Ollie’s House need a coat of paint?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  Please feel free to leave a comment (I am so grateful for each and every one) and check out the poll in the side bar to cast your vote as well!

Thanks for stopping by... around here, the door is always open.
